 Generalities: 

In this chapter, we study the conjugation of the irregular verb YALLID = to be (to reside, to stay in a place).

In some grammars, it can also be found under the infinitive OOL, OOLID or YIIL.

It should not be confused with AHAAN = to be (to exist).

The verb DEGGID or DEGGEN = to be, to live, to settle, is often preferred today.

This verb has the peculiarity of having subject prefixes in the Present General and Past General, in place of or in addition to the usual marks of tense, number, and person suffixed at the end of the verb.



 Present General:

OOLID - IMPERATIVE

 Common Expressions: 


Soo olla! = stay in peace!

Ma osheen or Maad ku osheen = how are you (equivalent to Is ka warran).


 "There is / There are" 


The verb YALLID or OOLID is also used to translate "there is/are", as in English.

You must however pay attention to agree YALLID with the different subject nouns: feminine, masculine, or plural.


Sonkor ma tallaa? = Is there sugar? Haa, way tallaa = Yes, there is Maya, ma tallo = No, there isn't
Bur ma yallaa? = Is there flour? Haa, wuu yallaa = Yes, there is Maya, ma yallo = No, there isn't
Caano ma yallaan? = Is there milk? Haa, way yallaan = Yes, there is Maya, ma yallaan = No, there isn't
